When Ashely was little, she was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, one of the disorders in the autism spectrum.  Ashley was extremely quiet, followed a schedule and found it hard to deviate from it.  Sometimes she would not respond like either not hearing or not understanding.  When in public (school, outings, community events) she was very intraverted and withdrawn.  People responded in a similar manner.  Physical activities were a challenge, as was reading, writing, math and all school classes and activities.  Friends were few.

Ashley came to the DAC after finishing high school.  Her reading and writing skills were at a 2nd to 4th grade level and physical activities still a challenge.  She was still very quiet and sometimes not responding.  Ashely is now a differnt person!  Thanks to the staff of the DAC!

With the help and reinforcement of the DAC staff, Ashely is now a much happier person.  Ashley now voices her opinion, she will choose beween things when given the opportunity.  She is not afraid of trying something new knowing the staff will be there to help and guide her if needed.  Daily, she is given the opportunity to help other peers and staff and will take on responsibilites so the work is done.  Ashley likes to visit with others now.  She will help and reassure peers.  Ashely is now reading more, working on her writing skills and works out in the community.  I believe this all came about because the staff is very understanding, caring and extremely patient with the people that they serve.
