Karen learns new skill for leisure

Karen finds new hobby!
We at the DAC want to encourage our staff to bring in their passions, talents, interests and skills. Debi Driscoll loves to sew. She brought her passion to work and started up a “sewing group” which took off for a while. There were four to start. They made a vest, table running and pillow. After several weeks interest began to waver for most, but Karen continued to seek Debi out to learn more. She has made a lap quilt, pillows, Valentines and Halloween table runners. She enjoyed this so much that she has purchased her own sewing machine for home.
The DAC received a grant from the East Grand Forks Arts and Craft Council which enabled us to purchase a sewing machine, cutting board and cutter, pins, scissors and other needed equipment. This machine is available to anyone with an interest. Karen is the one sewing on our “DAC quilt”. Each client received a muslin block to create a square for the quilt. Each person drew, sewed or painted something that reflected their interest on their own quilting block. We have seen race cars, mini quilts, Sioux heads, semi trucks, bowling, water skiing and more! These quilt blocks will be sewn together and be displayed in our hallway.
This new hobby of sewing, for Karen, has been amazing for her! It has built on her confidence and self esteem it has increased her social skills as she will walk around the DAC showing off her latest project. Karen is pictured with her latest creation: A Halloween pillow.
